Mid-Week Randoms

I know I still need to post the rest of our Autumn in Asheville trip, and I will.  But for now, here are a few mid-week randoms:

  • You may be wondering about the status of the Big Move and when I plan to post about the new house.  While we are extremely excited to move and have been discussing lots of ideas for the new house, there is still one big problem...we have not sold our current house.  We have had several lookers and even had an offer, but that offer was retracted.  Most of the feedback we've been given is that the house would be everyone's number one choice if it had an additional bedroom upstairs and a master bathroom, both of which are things we can't change.  So, we're still waiting for the perfect buyer to come along and fall in love with our cute little house.

    Not having a buyer for our house creates a little bit of a dilemma when it comes time to close on our new house (in a few short weeks) and move because we think our current house will show better with our furniture still in it.  If we completely move out, the old house will look a little empty and we don't want potential buyers to think it isn't a cozy home.  So, that is where we are on the house front.  And just for kicks, here is an exterior picture of the new house!!!
{Don't worry, we plan to give it a little makeover this spring with a new paint scheme and updated landscaping. }

  • Koby attended his first day of Doggie Daycare last week.  We had a scheduling conflict with two house showings so we just decided to try out daycare and see how he liked it.  If his snoring on the car ride home was any indication, I think it was a success!
  • The Wildcats are 7-0 heading into this week's game against OU.  Last night Brandon was watching clips from our victory over the Sooners in the Big 12 Championship in preparation for the game.
  • I made a really yummy crockpot bbq chicken recipe this past weekend when Brandon's family was in town so I thought I would share it here:

    1 bag frozen breasts
    1 16 oz. bottle of bbq sauce (I used Stubb's original)
    1/4 - 1/2 c. Italian dressing
    2 T. Worchestershire sauce
    1/4 c. brown sugar

    Place chicken in the crockpot.  Stir together remaining ingredients and pour over chicken.  Cook on low 6-8 hours.  Remove chicken from sauce, shred and return to the pot.  Serve on rolls.
  • I've been telling myself it is time to rearrange our closets and put our summer clothes away and I keep finding other things to do instead.  Tonight, it is on!  I'm tired of weeding through totes and making trips downstairs to find something to wear to work each morning.  Plus, it will help me do a little packing at the same time :)
  • Have I mentioned that I'm in love with the Salted Caramel Mocha from Starbucks?  Oh. My. Word.  So so good!
  • I need suggestions for a good devotional or Bible study.  We've been in a rut lately and need some new material at our house.  Any suggestions are welcome!
That is all I have for now.  Happy Wednesday!

Autumn in Asheville - Part One

Last week, my mom and I took a Mother Daughter vacation to Asheville, NC.  We heard autumn in that part of the country is spectacular and I had some down time at work so the timing worked out perfect for a beautiful and relaxing trip!

I really didn't know much about Asheville prior to leaving, except that it is the home of the Biltmore Estate, which was one of the main attractions during our visit.  When we arrived on Thursday afternoon, we were greated with beautiful trees and wonderful weather.  We ventured downtown for lunch and some shopping.  Downtown Asheville reminds me a lot of Boulder, CO.  Its very eclectic with a little hippy flair.  There were dogs lounging near cafe tables that were on the sidewalk, dogs being walked up and down the streets, and there were even dogs in a few stores.  There was also a strong "Buy Local" message downtown and a lot of the shops were little mom and pop type shops and boutiques as opposed to chain stores.  Mom and I stopped for lunch at a crepe restautrant and had a delicious crepe sandwich and a dessert crepe called a "Dirty Banana".  It was stuffed with Nutella and bananas and drizzled with caramel.  Delicious!

After we browsed around downtown, we decided to drive around and see what we could stumble upon.  After noticing a few signs for the Historic Grove Park Inn, we decided to go check it out.  One of my mom's friends, who is actually from the area, told us to make dinner reservations at the Inn, so we thought we would do that while we were there.  It is a very old hotel and resort nestled back in the trees and many famous people have stayed there including Eleanor Roosevelt, Henry Ford, and most recently President Obama.

{That is one of the two fireplaces in the lobby area of the hotel.  It was HUGE!}
 Since we had been traveling all day, we headed back to the hotel and decided to catch a movie that evening.  We ended up seeing The Help and it was fabulous.  Mom had read the book, but I had not so it was all new to me.  I'm usually not a crier, but the ending killed me!

The next morning, we got up and headed to the Biltmore Estate, which was the main focus of our trip.  The only word I can think of to describe this place is "unfathomable"!  The place was enormous and lavish and I just can't imagine having that kind of money during that time period.  We were not allowed to take pictures inside, but here are a few from the outside:

And a few stats:
  • The estate sits on 125,000 acres.  The landscaping was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the creator of New York's Central Park.
  • It took five years to build the estate.
  • There are 250 rooms inside.
  • George Vanderbilt was a bachelor when he built the estate.
  • The land was pretty much beran so he planted 3 million trees on the property.
  • They opened a dairy on the property, not for milk but for the manure so they could plant all of those trees.
  • In the basement there is a 70,000 gallon pool, a bowling alley, a workout facility, and a party room.  And that doesn't even begin to include the multiple kitchens, pantries, changing rooms, etc.
The craftsmanship inside the home is beautiful.  The banquet room reminded us of a church sactuary because of the high ceilings, the organ pipes, and the large chairs.  The textiles that were used for the bedding and drapery were exquisite.  The views that looked out over the Blue Ridge Mountains were breathtaking.  It is just something you have to see to believe.

The estate is still the largest privately owned estate in the country and the family has put a lot of effort into preserving it and keeping it in the family.  They turned the carriage house, which is not shown in these pictures, into a little gift shop and restaurant corridor.  There are a couple of outdoor cafes, along with the Stable Cafe, which is where we had lunch, and then several shops.  Here is a picture from our lunch:

After lunch we headed to Antler Hill Village, which is also on the Biltmore property.  It is the area where the dairy, turned winery, is located along with the barns and a produce garden.  We had to drive a couple of miles to reach Antler Hill and passed through the Biltmore Gardens on our way.  They were busy preparing for fall, so the gardens were full of beautiful mums!

A few pics from Antler Hill:

{The large hotel in the back of the picture is the Biltmore Inn}

We toured the winery while we were there and then headed up to the Biltmore Inn for afternoon tea.  The Inn is a very nice hotel that is located on the property.  It also provided amazing views of the mountains and we had a lovely afternoon tea.  We were still full from lunch so we ended up taking half of our tea goodies to-go.

Here are a few pictures from the Inn:

{If you look close, you can see the roofline of the Biltmore Estate.}

By the end fo the day, we were pretty wiped out!  We headed back to the hotel to rest up for our adventures the next day.  Stay tuned!

Pinnable Me Friday - Kitchen Ideas

One of the big rooms we want to eventually re-do in the new house is our kitchen.  Currently, it has light blue laminate countertops and a sky blue and white tiled back splash.  It also has the ever-popular (and I say that with sarcasm) honey oak cabinetry.  Pretty awesome, right?!?  Since the kitchen is one of my favorite rooms in any house, I definitely want ours to be fabulous!  So, thanks to Pinterest, I've been able to get some ideas of what I'd like to do.

This kitchen embodies a lot of the characteristics we're looking for:
  • light colored cabinets
  • glass inserts in a few cabinets
  • fun hardware
  • dark, solid surface countertops
  • mosaic back splash
I don't love the light fixtures and some of the more traditional decor, but the bones are great!

The thing I love most about this kitchen - the cabinet color!  I love the idea of a slightly grey cabinet because it adds a modern touch and is something a little different than the normal white.  I also love the cabinet profiles - straight and simple - along with the hardware and glass inserts.  The only thing I'm not terribly crazy about is the light colored countertops.

This is another kitchen that is similar to the first kitchen, but uses subway tile (a cheaper alternative to mosaic) for the back splash, which I also like.

As for kitchen decor, here are a few things that have caught my eye!

A bold color!  We have not officially decided if we'll paint all of our trim white, so that will be one factor in the big paint decision, but I L.O.V.E. this navy blue color!  The kitchen has big bright windows so I think it could handle a dark color, especially if we paint our cabinets a light color.

I love the style of this kitchen.  Everything from the chandelier, to the kitchen table and chairs, to the curtains.  Such a fun look!  I'm definitely not crazy about the cabinets or countertops though...just an FYI.

One of the other features of the new kitchen that we are excited about is an eating bar.  And since we will probably do our fair share of eating in that location, we'll need barstools.  I think these are fun and won't take up too much room or get in the way of traffic since the door to the deck is right beside the eating bar.

So, there you have it.  A few ideas for our new kitchen!

Thursday Things

Yep, it's Thursday again and I haven't posted since last Thursday.  I'm not even going to make an excuse or mention how busy we've been, it's just life right now.  Here is what has been going on:
  • Our house has been shown four times this week, which is exciting but we're ready for someone to fall in love and make an offer :)
  • Since we do not know when our showings will take place, we have to keep the house looking pristine at all times.  Every night before we go to bed, we pick up everything on the counters/floor/table/etc, put dishes in the dishwasher, and sometimes I will vacuum.  Then, in the morning we make our bed, wipe down the bathroom, shut closet doors, open blinds, dump the trash, and do one last sweep through the house to make sure everything is picked up.  Except for yesterday!  We had a showing at 3:30 and when I got home I realized that a water bottle had been left on the floor beside our bed, the iron was on top  of the washer and not on its little hook, and we left the tractor sprinkler and hose strung out in the yard.  Brandon thinks the hose issue will show them we're still watering our yard, while I think it draws more attention to the fact we don't have a sprinkler system.  Either way, there was nothing we could do about it at that point.  We just hope the potential buyer was able to see past those few items :)
  • We traveled to Manhattan last Saturday and watched the Cats beat Baylor!  It was a super fun game and we are definitely excited to watch them play the rest of the season.
  • Last Sunday we intended to go visit my friend in Oklahoma who had a baby a couple of weeks ago, but she called as we were getting around that morning and told us she was sick :(  I'm hoping to go visit her this weekend while Brandon and a friend go to the KSU game, but I hear there is a chance for severe weather and I don't think I want to be driving in Oklahoma during severe weather!  Let's hope it doesn't happen because at this rate, I think that baby will be 18 before I get to meet him!!
  • We got to celebrate Brandon's dad's birthday with him this week.  Brandon's uncle is in the hospital so his parents brought his grandma to town on Tuesday to help his aunt out and Tuesday just happened to be his dad's birthday.  So, we all went out to eat to celebrate.  It was nice to see them mid-week, even if it was just for a couple of hours.
  • My friend Ali and I are making bierocks on Sunday and I can't wait!  I LOVE homemade bierocks and we have a great time making them.
  • Have I mentioned that every wall in our new house is white?  Well, it is.  Every. Single. One.  So, I've been browsing Pinterest trying to find paint color schemes that I like.  One thing I know for sure, I'm not going to paint every wall the same color like we did when we first moved into our current house.
  • Koby has been with my parents for almost TWO WEEKS and I miss the little guy so much!!  I think I'm going to go pick him up this weekend and then we're just going to have to make arrangements to get him out of the house when we have showings.  He just makes life around our house a little more exciting :)
  • I need to start laying clothes out for my trip next weekend, but I honestly have no idea what to take.  I can't decide if it will still be too warm for boots and leggings, but I also don't want to take summer stuff, simply because I'm tired of my summer clothes.
